Biography

Akkineni Nageswara Rao is also known as ANR born on September 20, 1924 at Venkataraghava Puram, Dist. Krishna, Andhra Pradesh. He is one of the first fully commercial Telugu Cinema heroes. His films includes various range of genres includes mythological, folk tale, social, adventure and drama. He is one of the greatest telugu actors for almost 50 years. He got married to Srmt. Annapurna in 1949 and blessed with four children Nagarjuna, Sathyavathi, Venkat, Naga Susheela.

His education was limited to primary schooling due to the poor economic conditions of his parents. He took to acting career at a very early age. Before movies he mostly acted in theaters. He started acting in street shows at the age of nine and acted in several shows. Many times he acted female roles since women were not allowed on stage at that time. His most popular stage plays were Telugu Thalli, Asha Jyothi, and Sathya Anveshana.

Nageswara Rao was discovered by Producer and Director Mr. Ghantasala Balaramayya at the Vijayawada railway station by chance, and was immediately offered the lead role in his upcoming movie Seeta Rama Jananam. He played the role of Lord Rama in that film. He has been active in the Telugu film industry since 1941. He is noted for his class roles in the mid 60's. He has since acted in over 270 films, spanning the Telugu, Tamil and Hindi languages. A majority of his films were both commercial and critical successes. Even at the age of 80+, Nageswara Rao still acts.

He is the first person a main pillar to cause the shift of Telugu film industry from Tamilnadu to Andhra Pradesh. Soon after the move to Hyderabad, Nageswara Rao founded his own production house, Annapoorna Studios located in Banjara Hills. He is the Founder and Chairman of Annapurna International School of Film + Media (AISFM).

He is specifically remembered in Andhra Pradesh for his biographical roles like Dr.Chakravarthy, Devadasu, Vipranarayana, Chakradhari, Tukaram, Kalidasu, Jayadeva, Tenali Ramakrishna, Kshethrayya etc. Akkineni's Premabhishekam movie is one of the biggest Industry Hit movies in Tollywood. Premabhishekam has an amazing 533 days run in Hyderabad City which is still highest run in a city for telugu movies. Premabhishekam is the only film in telugu that went for 365+ days run directly.

Nageswara Rao was Awarded Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1990, the highest award for films in India for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. He is also a recipient of Padmashri, Padmabhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards.
